Sustainability Statement

Last updated: 5 September 2026.

This statement delineates the current practices at Don’t Panic Consultancy pertinent to environmental impact.

This document is subject to periodic revisions. Any such revisions automatically replace and invalidate all preceding versions as of their respective publication dates.

A comprehensive version history, including details of prior revisions and modifications, is publicly available in the GitHub repository for this website.

Questions or concerns regarding any specific version or changes between versions should be directed to the contact information provided in the Legal Notice.

1. Scale

The environmental impact of this boutique firm is inherently limited by the absence of an office, commuting requirements, a vehicle fleet, or additional staff. This is stated explicitly rather than as an achievement, as the limited scale inherently reduces environmental impact. The more significant contributions stem from the decisions made within that constrained scope.

2. IT Infrastructure

This website is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Content delivery is intentionally restricted to edge locations in the United States, Canada, and Europe, rather than being deployed across the entire global network. This approach keeps the infrastructure scope proportionate to the geographic distribution of clients and visitors. Data is automatically purged in accordance with its intended purpose, optimising the data footprint. Further details about data retention are available in the Privacy Policy.

3. Hardware

Laptops and phones used in the business are kept in service until they fail or become impractically slow, averaging roughly four years per device, rather than replaced on a fixed cycle.

Where client engagements require work on client-owned equipment, that equipment falls outside this statement.

4. Travel

Travel for client engagements is governed by the client’s own travel policy, where one exists. Regardless, the consistent preference is to limit travel to what is meaningful and effective for the engagement, rather than routine or expected attendance.

Travel to clients is by electric car or public transport when possible.

5. People

Sustainability, in the sense employed herein, extends beyond solely environmental impact. As a solo endeavor, the associated commitments are inherently modest in scope; however, they are explicitly articulated rather than remaining implicit.

Access to such strategic and architectural expertise is frequently confined to organizations capable of supporting enterprise-scale engagements. An intentional aspect of this practice is to treat smaller clients with the same rigor and attention as larger clients, rather than reserving comprehensive engagement solely for the most substantial accounts.

In instances where subcontractors or collaborators are engaged in a project, they shall be compensated fairly and according to mutually agreed terms, in alignment with the standards that this organization would uphold for itself.

When a genuine choice is available between suppliers or service providers, preference is accorded to local and regional enterprises over larger alternatives, based on the view that such practices should bolster the same local economy from which they draw clients.

6. Use of AI

Artificial Intelligence tools are employed within this practice, encompassing activities such as drafting, research, and software development. The environmental impact associated with these tools is tangible. The processes of model training and inference demand considerable quantities of energy and water; this impact is explicitly acknowledged and not offset elsewhere within this statement. The utilization of these tools is deliberate rather than indiscriminate, and presently, this practice lacks a method to quantify its respective contribution to this impact. Should such a method become available, this section will be revised accordingly.

7. What this statement does not yet include

This statement deliberately omits a quantified personal or household carbon footprint figure. Such a figure will only be published upon calculation through a recognized and methodologically transparent source, rather than an estimate. The statement will be subsequently updated at that time.

8. Questions
